Who am I

Hi everyone
First of all I’m Sara Totonji, a daughter of the most amazing parents, and a mother to the most adorable kids in the world. I have graduated from princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University with a BSC of English literature and language in 2011.
I guess you would like to know how I became a Gentle Sleep Coach.
Well as so many mothers، when I knew I was pregnant, I got excited and started my plans for my baby. from clothes, cribs, bath accessorize, to strollers and so on. I also had to do my readings which included books about motherhood, childhood, breastfeeding, nutritions, etc.
But as much as you read, the real thing gives you so many surprises you where not expecting!! as the continues of fussing, crying,sleep deprivation, colic ( on of all mothers nightmares),etc.
When I had my first son, he was truly very fussy and annoying ( sorry son, but it’s true, but he turned out amazing after). I was sleep deprived and exhausted, I began to hate motherhood. He used to sleep for 30 minutes only and wake up and I would have feed him in order to get him back to sleep for another 30 minutes, it was nonsense and exhausting. so when he reached 6 months. we discovered Kim West, the sleep lady and her gentle method. We took action right away, we where so desperate to try any method. We tried all sort of ways such as rocking, nursing, cry it out, nothing worked. so Kim was our only hope. We started the next day with her, and in just a week or so, our son was sleeping beautifully a 12 hour night stretch and wonderful naps. He became less fussy, more happy, and we got to sleep as normal people.
So when I had my second son, as soon as he was cleared for sleep training, I went ahead and did the shuffle with him (this little guy was much easier than his brother).
So after that I thought, if I was successful with my kids, why don’t I become certified and help parents who are tired, desperate and are in the same situation that I was in. That was the start of my career in becoming one of the first gentle sleep coaches in the Kingdom.

As for my training, I  enrolled in the advanced program of Kim West’s gentle sleep coaching program in January 2017. I am licensed and certified to help parents with their children and baby’s. the program is the most updated until this day about sleep problems and training for children.

The Gentle Sleep Coach Program is the first and most extensive professional sleep coaching certification program available. The program involves over 80 hours of training, an exam and participation in case supervision with Kim West, LCSW-C (a.k.a. “the Sleep Lady”) who has been helping tired parents for over 17 years. Clinical supervision and ongoing advanced training are required to maintain certification as a Gentle Sleep Coach.

Some of my training topics included:

  • Basic counseling and child development
  • Sleep science and behavioral modification techniques
  • Secure attachment theory
  • Support for the breastfeeding mother

The training also consisted of lectures from top specialists, including:

  • Postpartum Depression from Dr Shoshana Bennett, author and leading specialist on Postpartum Depression
  • Medical Conditions and Sleep Apnea in Children led by Dr Lewis Kass, Director of Children’s Sleep Center
  • Sensory Processing Disorders and Sleep by Jodi Jennings, OTLR
    The GSC Program also includes an exclusive advanced training series directly centered around how to gently work with babies 4 and 5 months of age. This program which I have also completed consists of over 40 hours of instruction and mentorship.

Some of the curriculum training topics include:

  • In depth knowledge of the delicate nature of infants under 6 months of age and how to consider all elements of their well-being.
  • Current evidence based guidelines and instruction on how to evaluate the 4-6 month old child and family and determine if the child is ready for sleep coaching.
  • Gentle sleep solutions and strategies that are effective and developmentally appropriate for the younger baby.

This specialty training is designed to give coaches the knowledge, education and all the tools and resources they need to successfully work with families of babies 4-6 months of age in a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate manner.

I am a new mom for a 9 month-old girl and she has sleeping problems during day & night. I have tried the gentle sleeping methods with Sara Totonji to help adjust my daughter's sleeping habits, they were so helpful. I'm so thankful to her for it's such a relief to me that she can now sleep for uninterrupted 12 hours

I have a daughter who is 10 months old, she used to wake up 2 - 3 time during the night and her naps where all over the place. I have participated in the program with Sara and she worked up a plan for my daughter so she would sleep without waking at night and better naps, we started and the first nights where hard but everything comes step by step, Sara would call me every couple of days to check how we where doing, until we completed the program and reached the goal. And now with Allah's help and then Sara my daughter is sleeping 12 continues hours during the night and her naps are in shape.
